Butterfly Blueprints: Youth Building What’s Next

I had the incredible honor of serving as a judge for the Butterfly Rites of Passage business pitch competition, hosted by Butterflies-N-Effect (BNE)—and let me just say, the future is bold, brilliant, and already making moves.

As the young ladies took the stage to present their business ideas, you could feel the nerves in the air—but even stronger was the sense of purpose. These middle schoolers weren’t just pitching ideas; they were stepping fully into their voices, their vision, and their power. From fashion brands to wellness concepts, every presentation was a reflection of creativity, confidence, and care for their communities.

The event was more than a pitch competition—it was a rite of passage in every sense. A moment for these youth to be seen, celebrated, and challenged to grow beyond what they may have thought was possible. And as a judge, I didn’t take that lightly. I came in ready to give thoughtful feedback, but I left feeling deeply inspired by their courage, preparation, and the clear support system around them.

Butterflies-N-Effect (BNE) is doing critical, transformational work. By centering the academic, social, emotional, and health needs of middle school-aged minority youth, BNE is creating a pathway for these young minds to not only dream—but to lead. Through mentorship, education, and events like this, they’re helping youth develop confidence, resilience, and the real-world skills needed to navigate life’s challenges with purpose and pride.

The ceremony concluded with a powerful graduation moment, honoring the participants for their growth and achievements throughout the program. You could see the pride in their eyes—and in the eyes of their families. These ceremonies do more than mark milestones—they plant seeds of belief that will bloom long after the applause fades.

It was a privilege to witness this next generation take flight. May we continue to create spaces like this where young people are reminded that their ideas matter, their voices are powerful, and their journey is just beginning.
